This is just ridiculous. Just when I have received, what I think is my favourite watch of all time (Romaine Jerome Titanic DNA LTD Edition) another watch comes along that blows it out of the water. Yes, I said that.
In this case it is Zenith, an old Swiss company that in my opinion does not get the respect it deserves from the general public but does receive high accolades form collectors and industry professionals.
The Zenith Chronomaster XXT El Primero Open Grande Date is just such a watch. Honestly, the only way you could do better than this is with a watch containing a visible Tourbillon.
The face has two open windows surfaced in smoked grey sapphire. The left side reveals the balance and escapement and on the other shows the inner workings of the date wheels.
Below is a bold inset that shows the power reserve. I love that feature on any watch and on this one it is just dynamite.
The fine detail on the watch face itself is amazing and absolutely deserves a good cruise with a magnifying glass but when you turn the watch over the bit that only you get to see on a regular basis is simply breathtaking, magnified or not.
It has a display back which let’s face it is pretty common these days, but what is not common is the amount of incredible hand finishing and engraving to be found on the bridges and mechanicals.
All in all this watch displays the kind of artisanship generally only found on watches exceeding a hundred thousand dollars or more. If it were rendered in platinum I would bet it would easily be that much.
I think this watch is one of the best values out there, and judging by trends it is also appreciation at a good clip making it a solid investment even if you are heartless enough to not appreciate this truly amazing timepiece.
Just bear in mind that if you buy this watch I will always resent you just a little.
Cheers,
David Charles Grainger
